The (political) opening of the Northern Sea Route

The crossing of the Northeast Passage by two German vessels is more of a reflection of a political thaw with the Russians than a reduction in the Arctic ice.Last summer, two trade ships belonging to Beluga Shipping, a German company, successfully sailed through the “Northeast Passage” that follows the Russian Arctic Ocean coast. Generally packed with ice, the Northeast Passage cuts nearly 30% off the distance between Europe and the Pacific Ocean the Suez Canal. Press reports stated that “the two German vessels, ‘Beluga Fraternity’ and ‘Beluga Foresight’ [were] the first two non-Russian trade vessels to cross the entire Northeast Passage”. Claude Lorius receives France’s Legion of Honor award in Greenland

Last August, glaciologist Claude Lorius embarked on “Diamant”, a vessel owned by the Ponant line, alongside Polar Ambassador Michel Rocard and six of the founding members of NGO le Cercle Polaire. Destination: the west coast of Greenland, from Narsasuaq to Ilulisat. “The Arctic fascinates me, but I still prefer Antarctica”, confided Claude Lorius as the vessel docked, lest his journey in the High North be misconstrued as an infidelity to the White Continent. A surprise awaited him, discretely prepared by Captain Jean-Philippe Lemaire: the ceremony in which he was made a Commandeur of France’s Ordre de la Légion d’Honneur by his elder, Ambassador Rocard, in the open air on the rear bridge, with the icebergs in the background… Read more - [top of page]

Plongée sous les icebergs à Ilulissat

Dans ce cimetière d'icebergs qu'est le fjord d'Illulissat où des blocs de glace de plus de 100 mètres de haut restent bloqués par la moraine sous-marine, Nicolas Dubreuil s'est livré le 2 août 2009 à une exploration sous-marine de la face cachée des icebergs.La mer était calme. Pas de vent. Le ciel était uniformément bleu. Une température extérieure idéale de 7°C et une eau très claire avoisinant les 2°C. Autrement dit, cette journée du 2 août 2009, était une occasion idéale pour aller plonger sous les icebergs.Nous quittons la ville groenlandaise d’Ilulissat en Zodiac pour rejoindre l’entrée du fjord de glace. Juste à l’endroit ou ces géants des mers restent bloqués par la moraine sous marine. Orques antarctiques : une spéciation en cours ?

De loin le cétacé le mieux connu du public, l’orque est au cœur de l’une des polémiques scientifiques les plus étranges de ces vingt dernières années. Là où le public ne voit qu’une sorte de dauphin géant noir et blanc, le héros de Sauvez Willy fait l’objet d’âpres discussions parmi les cétologues pour déterminer si ce mammifère marin qui a conquis toutes les mers du globe constitue une seule et même espèce. Les petites variations de couleur, de taille et de comportement que l’on relève entre les populations du Pacifique Nord, de l’Atlantique Nord et les trois formes identifiées en Antarctique sont-elles les indices de l’émergence de plusieurs espèces différentes dont chacune se serait adaptée à des conditions environnementales particulières ? … Lire la suite - [retour haut de page]
