Laurent Mayet is the president of the think tank le Cercle Polaire. He was advisor to the former Prime minister Michel Rocard, ambassador for Polar Affairs from 2009 to 2016 followed by a diplomatic mission as Special Representative for Polar Affairs and interministerial coordinator of the national Arctic roadmap implementation at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2016-2017). In 2018 he served as deputy to the first French ambassador in charge of Ocean Affairs, Serge Segura. As a Senior Navel officer reservist, in 2016, he was awarded the bronze medal of voluntary military service in recognition of his chairmanship of the Arctic working group at the Navy Center of strategic studies, which led to a deliverable entitled “The Opening of the Arctic Ocean”. After receiving a degree in oceanography and passing the high level French teaching examination in physical science, he focussed on philosophy of science. With a postgraduate degree in philosophy, he taught natural philosophy at University Paris 1 - Pantheon-Sorbonne from 1991 to 2007. Appointed in 2022 by the minister of education, he is presently a project officer in charge of coordination of the educational program « The Call of the Poles » at a national level, dedicated to the new challenges of the polar regions, in partnership with NGO le Cercle Polaire. He has traveled extensively in Antarctica as well as the northern circumpolar region.
