“Science can help reconcile the contradictory interests of the countries that are trying to impose their will in the Arctic”

Vladimir Kotliakov is one of the pioneers of Russia’s polar research. He has spent many winters in the Arctic or in Antarctica and numerous seasons in the mountains of the Caucuses, the Pamir mountains, in Tian Shan, on the glaciers of Svalbard and in Greenland. Along with his colleague Claude Lorius, he was a pioneer of paleoclimatologic research into the composition of air bubbles in polar ice carried out at the Vostok station in Antarctica.
